New Year, Resolutions and Ownership
The New Year is not yet a month old and I can’t begin to tell you how many people I’ve come in contact with that have already “fallen off the wagon” – So long resolutions! Thanks for coming out!
This got me thinking. Maybe its time we put a permanent rest to resolutions. Bye bye. No more. No more statements of you changing your life while fueled with the enthusiasm of intoxication or holiday celebrations.
Now that there are so many of you that have fallen – Let’s be real, most of you jumped if you were even on – the wagon. How about we start making some real changes. Let’s start working on making some permanent upgrades. Let’s make upgrades to your paradigm and get you to that often talked about place you keep missing out on. Let’s get you moving. Let’s get you shedding that extra weight you have carried for years. Let’s help you get out of debt. Let’s get you closer to your life goals this year. Let’s get to work building a better human and ultimately, a better you.
For all of this to happen, you are going to have to have an honest conversation about where you are and where you want to go. There is no finger pointing. No blaming anyone. No justifying why or how you are where you are. This is the starting point of the upgraded you.
Your first task. Ownership.
Ownership of your life and where you want to end up. For an in-depth understanding of this concept, I am going to direct you to the men that – literally – wrote the book to read on ownership. Navy Seals Jocko Willink and Leif Babin – both veterans of many deployments have returned from military service to civilian life and have published the best selling book – Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win.
These two were able to take the leadership lessons learned in the streets of Ramadi and transfer them to the business world.
Wait. Why would you need to read this if this is a book on leadership?
Simple. As we upgrade your paradigm, you need to understand you are the leader of Your life Inc. As the commander in-chief, the lessons in this book are just as applicable to you the person as they would be in the working world.
Here is the scary part for a lot of you. The accountability as the leader begins and ends with you.
I promise you these guys are not scary individuals – maybe in their capabilities – but their delivery is straight forward and the lessons and ideas are laced with real world examples of their applications. This is all done in a manner that those of us without an MBA can appreciate, while those with an MBA can also benefit from.
WARNING: Remember that the authors are U.S. Navy Seals. The stories they bring from combat may not be for everyone. I am sure most of you have your own opinions about different conflicts happening globally. However, the application to business and leadership isn’t any less impactful. You may want to pay closer attention to the application to business lessons contained in these pages.
Now I can only speak for myself and my experiences. This book – for me – changed my approach to a lot of different items in my life, as I am sure it will do for you. The adage of Iron sharpens Iron holds true here and its definitely enhanced my leadership and communication styles. You should take note that this is the first of many recommendations coming your way through these pages here. This also means that you won’t be getting a full summary of what this book is trying to teach you. You need to read this and pull the lessons from it and make the practical applications to your life for yourself.
So, it’s time to revisit your goals for this year. There is no pressure from a group of friends standing around asking about your resolutions. Right here, right now write down three things you want to enhance this year. Post that list anywhere you will be forced to look at it everyday. Keep this as part of your accountability to yourself. Like anyone, you will have days where getting to your goals seem more daunting then others. It’s in those moments that you should be reminded that discipline equals freedom.
The discipline to stay the course will provide you the freedom to do as you please when you achieve your goal. Stop trying to be perfect. Always look to take a step forward no matter how imperfect it is. Never lose site of your “why” (Why you are doing what you do – your purpose connected to this action).
By years’ end, you will look back and see how far you’ve come on your journey in becoming a better human.
