Becoming a Better Human
Better.
You know the word. You hear it. You use it. If you are reading these words, then it’s obvious. You want to achieve it.
I want to know how you go about achieving your better. But until I do, you are stuck with hearing about mine.
My story is not dissimilar then what you may have heard before, you think you are moving along through life just fine making strides in building a life. Then you are handed you a major test. Most of your plans now out the window you find yourself scrambling to 1. Make sense of things 2. Keep it together. It also appears that anything you try, seems to go wrong.
Or maybe that was just me.
When the storm clouds finally pass, you may have found yourself on a very different path with a supporting cast of people you recently acquired on your journey. You’ve changed. But you have yet to have embraced it fully. You clearly have some new skills and major lessons learned to go with the inevitable scarring that has recently crusted over. Now what? Where do you go from here? Where does this path lead? How should you maximize yourself and these new found skills? When can I pick at this scab or am I supposed to ignore it?
The early days of new found pain and difficulty are…well, difficult. It’s here that the genesis of change begins its journey. How on earth do you move forward when you are so restless you can’t bring yourself to get up out of bed?
One.
Step.
At a time.
Oh cliché!
Maybe, but the reality is that in this moment – should you have chosen to grow – the cliché holds true. I believe that this is where all the little things you choose to do, regardless of how well you do them, will help lead you to be the person you want to be and live the life of your dreams.
For me, it was in this moment that the Better Human Project was born.
My challenge to you is to take a hard look at yourself. Some would say – Stand in your truth. Stop justifying why things are the way they are. Whatever individual challenge you faced, it has happened. You were a very real part it. It’s not about assigning blame. That serves no one. You do have an ownership stake in your life….and thus the power to improve it.
As part of the Better Human Project, you should look to perform better, physically, mentally, spiritually and professionally. These things are not mutually exclusive. You will see that small improvements in one area will have compounding effects in others.
As part of your betterment, I challenge you to pick one area in your life and make it 1% better this week.
This could mean you walk for 5 minutes longer your last walk. Maybe you read a page of a book you have had for years, but never opened. Or perhaps you reached out to someone you haven’t heard from in a while, just to say hi. My personal favorite is getting to the gym so many of you are paying for, but not utilizing.
As you take up this challenge, don’t ever be afraid of why you are doing it. Trust your gut. Believe in yourself. Take the small steps to become a Better Human.
